Start off by putting some ice on your neck. Remember: ice is used for any muscle injury that you may encounter. Once you have experienced a trauma on the muscle, there is a high possibility that you might have swelling in your neck. Whenever you have an injury, the blood rushes towards the injured area to clot it and that is the reason why the swelling takes place. Therefore, once you apply ice to that area, the blood flow is reduced and that is how you can slow down swelling and also prevent the extra damage. Even though people believe that heating the area sooths the pain, it must be avoided for at least the first 48 to 72 hours of the injury. If you apply heat to the area, it is only going to increase the blood flow which will exacerbate the damage to the area.

You can try and take an anti-inflammatory. This is going to give you the same effect as ice. It is going to reduce the swelling after allowing the muscle tissues to return to normal so they can start rebuilding. A few anti-inflammatories even use muscle relaxants and they will keep the injured area from aching under strain. Make sure that you are taking the recommended dosage which is on the label of your anti-inflammatory. Moreover, there is a possibility that your stomach might get upset after eating anti-inflammatories.
