How to Make Homemade Taffy

Making taffy candy or taffy pulls was considered as a wonderful family activity in the previous decades. Although it is not very hard, making taffy can be quite a messy process. This is precisely the reason why many people avoid making taffy at home.

Utensils: a cutting board or a large cookie sheet, large saucepan, wax paper and buttered knife or scissors

Molasses: 1 cup
Regular granulated sugar: ½ cup
Brown sugar: 1/2 cup
Water candy thermometer: 1/3 cup
Butter: 2 tbsp
Baking soda: ¼ tbsp
Salt: a pinch
Softened butter: 1 stick

    Combine the ingredients

    Before starting the taffy, you need to grease your cookie sheet or the cutting board with butter or oil. In a large saucepan, combine the molasses, regular sugar, brown sugar and water.

    Boil the mixture

    You should now place the saucepan on a burner and let it boil, while you stir the mixture to ensure that the ingredients are properly blended. Stop stirring and let the mixture boil until it reaches 260 degrees F. You may use a candy thermometer to determine the temperature.

    Add butter, baking soda and salt

    You can remove the saucepan from heat and add baking soda, salt and 2 tablespoons of butter. In order to quickly incorporate the ingredients, you need stir the mixture before you dump the candy on a grease cutting board.

    Fold and stretch the taffy

    Grease your hands with the softened butter before you start to fold and stretch taffy between your hands as soon as it is cold enough to be touched. Until the taffy changes into a significantly lighter color, you should continue to pull and stretch. The taffy can now be shaped into a short rope length.

    Twirl the rope

    The rope can be made longer by twirling the taffy. Until the rope is uniformly 1 inch thick, continue to twirl. Place the twirled rope back on the cutting board.

    Cut the taffy in 1 inch pieces

    In order to cut the taffy in 1 inch pieces, you may use a knife or a scissor. You can wrap the candy pieces in waxed paper squares.
