How to Build a Closet in a Room

If you live in one home for long time, you eventually run out of space to store things. Most houses have an attic as the prime storage facility, but that gets full too in the longer run, or sometimes you don’t want to climb all the way up to access daily use objects. The best solution for this is to make a closet. Although easier said than done, a good looking and spacious closet can actually be made at home.

Building a closet in the room lessens the amount of flooring by a bit, but it more than makes up by giving you ample space to store daily use items.

You may make a wooden closet yourself, or you can purchase a ready-made closet. Place the closet in the room, mostly it is fixed in the corners of two walls as only one wall needs to be built, while in the case of placing it wall to wall results in the construction of only one wall.

Instructions

  • 1

Use pencil to draw the position of walls on the floor. If the floor is covered with carpet, outline the wall using a duct tape.

  • 2

Cut the floor along the lines that you drew in the last step. Where two plates meet, simply pull both of them out. Use floor plates to cover the surface of the closet floor.

  • 3

Floor plates are wood pieces upon which the doors of the closet will rest. Use nails to attach the floor plates to the floor with the help of a nail gun. There is no need to remove or roll out the carpet, just nail directly over it.

  • 4

Make the design of stud pattern on top of the floor plates. Start from one corner and lay an X on the surface. Go on placing X along the line after every 6 inches, making sure to place on under the edge.

  • 5

Make an identical set of floor plates which will be used as the roof of the closet, or you may use the roof of the house as the roof of the closet.

Use a builder’s level to adjust the top floor tiles on top of the closet. If your closet does not touch the roof of the room, you cannot use the level.

Use screws to fix top plates to the ceiling, it is recommended to put screws into joists. Install the wall panels and the two wooden doors, and your closet is good to go. Make as many compartments in the closet as you like by the use of plywood panels.
