Establish a budget for restoring
First of all, you need to determine a budget for the restoring. Sometimes the furniture is too old and you may require a considerable amount for repairs so make sure you have the amount in mind that you intend to spend.
Picture the end result
You must have a clear picture in mind of how you want the furniture to look like in the end. This includes the colour scheme you want to try and the other furniture items you will want it to match.
Clean the furniture
You need to clean the furniture thoroughly so that it can be restored. There might be a lot of dirt on it as it has been sitting around for many years. Scrub the furniture with a sponge using some oil soap and warm water to do the cleaning. Make sure you do not apply too much pressure as that can change the shape of the wood.
Repair the furniture
If there are any broken parts in the furniture, you need to repair them with the help of glue. You should also place any missing screws and replace any which are rusted. Also, fill in small cracks in the furniture by using coloured wood putty.
When you have done the repairing, the furniture has to be repainted or finished using some wood treatment. There will be stains on the furniture and scratches because of cleaning as painting or refinishing the surface will give it a new look. Make sure you thoroughly match the colour that needs to be used with the other furniture.
