3 Stains You’ll Have on New Year’s Day and How to Remove Them

New Year’s Eve parties are awesome, but many people dread New Year’s Day, and for good reason. That’s because New Year’s Eve parties typically result in quite a lot of New Year’s Day cleanup. Here are three common stains that you’ll encounter after your party’s over, and how to deal with them.

1. Vomit – Let’s get the big one out of the way quickly. It’s unpleasant, but it’s a reality that people drink too much and yes, occasionally throw up at parties. New Year’s Eve is the biggest party of the year, so why wouldn’t there be a bit of hurl here and there?

I’ll stop being disgusting. First, clear up as much as you can with toilet paper or paper towels, being careful not to spread the stain, then put a sponge with cold water over the stain. You can use liquid detergent to clean the stain out, or pet stain remover (sold at every store). Regularly wring out the rag or sponge you use to scrub the stain. Wear gloves and it won’t actually be too bad. If the vomit’s on upholstery, follow the same instructions, but take the cushion out to wash the cover, if you can, or use a carpet shampooer to clean the stain.

2. Champagne – People just aren’t careful with the good stuff, are they? Champagne may rub out with a bit of vinegar and water, but if you buy the pink, cheap champagne, you’ve got a bigger issue if it comes into contact with a white fabric. The best advice I’ve got is to just not buy cheap, pink champagne, but if you’ve got a stain to deal with, here’s what you do.

Pour white wine or club soda–or, if you’re ritzy, white champagne–onto the stain. The carbonation will help the red rise out of the carpet. Blot the stain with a towel, and finish cleaning with some rug cleaner, maybe the aforementioned pet stain cleaner.

3. Beer – Beer stains can be treated pretty normally, and should come out fairly easily. Simply treat the stain with liquid detergent or a 1 part vinegar, 2 part water solution. To get rid of any stale beer smell that you may have, you can leave an open bucket of vinegar in the room with the offensive odor. The vinegar will soak up the smell.
