How to Breakdown a Scene for EP Scheduling
Pre production is important in the making of a film, drama or any video. The execution will be perfect only if you are clear about the script. Breaking down the script is one of them as you write down each significant element needed for production. It includes cast, costumes, props, special effects etc.
There are two approaches in breaking down a script or a scene, Director’s break down and Producer’s breakdown. It helps a director to plan his camera shots whereas the producer can arrange every essential element with the help of this pre production work.

Read the scene:
First and the foremost thing you should do is to read the relevant scene. Do not just go over rather read each and every word alertly. Though, you will notice that scenes are in a sequence in the script but it does not happen in the making process. Draw a horizontal line to separate the scene and to avoid any confusion. -

Use coloured highlighters:
Use different colours to highlight different things in the script. For example, green for characters, yellow for props, blue for costumes etc. This will help you a lot in writing down all these things in the relevant sheet. -

Make a sheet:
Usually, the assistants have a script breakdown sheet but you can make it yourself if don’t have any. Make sure that you are mentioning the continuity, characters, wardrobe, makeup, props, special effects etc in this sheet. Leave some space for production notes. -

Director’s breakdown:
If you are breaking down a scene for the director then your approach will be different. The director is captain of the ship so you do not give him/her trivial details. A director just needs to know the significance and the context of the scene. You should just tell your boss a little bit about the previous scene and the scene coming after this one so that he/she can create some sort of continuity between these scenes. -

Producer’s breakdown:
Instead of creativity, a producer’s breakdown is more related to management. Give your producer complete information about the location, characters, props, equipments, costumes, extras etc. Make sure you have read the screenplay and dialogues properly otherwise there is the probability of missing something.
