Clever Ways to Make the Most of Cupboard Space

Cupboard space is hot real estate in most homes. It seems that no matter how many cabinets are available, they are never ample enough. When items are haphazardly put away, it does not matter how many storage units line the walls. It is important to make the most of available space, and it can be done by implementing just about every square inch. Use these clever storage solutions, and find room for everything that you need for dining, food preparation and more.

Use a Rack with Shelves Beneath the Sink

The cupboard under the sink is one of the most improperly used storage areas. Many people fill the bottom with cleaning supplies and junk that is rarely used. It can be fully utilized from top to bottom, even with plumbing in the way. Use a rack with shelves made especially for use beneath a kitchen sink. It will have a cutout to accommodate the drain trap as well as at least two levels for storing all sorts of things. It can still be used to hold cleaning supplies, but it will hold twice much.

Apply Cork Squares on the Inside of at Least Two Cupboard Doors

The inside surfaces of cupboard doors are ideal for posting notes, business cards and other small pieces of paper. It can even be used as a place to store keys and other miscellaneous items. Mount cork squares on the inside of at least two cupboard doors along with sturdy pushpins. Be sure to cut away the areas of the cork that would come in contact with the framework and shelves. It will be a great place to post reminders for upcoming appointments, receipts and anything else that will fit. They will be out of sight instead of out in the open for all to see.

Add a Second Level for Drinking Glass Storage with a Heavy Tray

If you could use more cupboard space for drinking glasses, it is not necessary to install another shelf. When existing shelving cannot be properly adjusted to store glasses in a clever space-saving way, use a heavy tray. Top the first row of overturned glasses with a heavy plastic or wooden tray. To keep them from sliding around, line the tray or board with foam shelf liner. If the tray is heavy enough and those below are evenly spaced from corner to corner, removing glasses from just one end should not cause the others to topple over.

These are just a few of the many clever methods that can be used to make the most of cupboard space. Use heavy vinyl-coated magazine files to hold canned goods. When one is removed, the next one will roll into place. They are cheaper than specialty holders that work the same way. The insides of cabinet doors can also be used to hold handy spice racks and plastic wrap, foil and more.
