Since ancient times, mankind has held an unquenchable fascination for dragons. It seems that every culture has its own legends concerning these mystical creatures. It wasn’t until the 17th century that people started doubting their actual physical existence. Regardless of the culture, their are some common beliefs concerning dragons. They are believed worldwide to have the ability to control the weather as well as other natural phenomena. They also represent the various mysteries of nature. They love to acquire as much legendary knowledge as possible, especially concerning the location of hidden treasure. They have a particular affinity for gold and precious jewels, which they keep hidden in their lair, protecting it fiercely from anyone who would try to steal it from them. They are generally portrayed as having the ability to breathe fire and to be able to shape-shift at will. It is this ability which allows them the opportunity to communicate with mankind in order to gain more knowledge.

Dragons are said to feed once every month on livestock such as sheep and ox. If the food supply is low, they may even dine on human flesh, preferring virgin maidens. They have the ability to distinguish intelligent life and generally try to allow such creatures to live in order to obtain information from them, sometimes even choosing to befriend them.

In Europe, dragons are seen as having wings, either two or four legs, and may be any color. They are thought to be greedy and evil. Sea monsters are thought to be a type of dragon.

In Asia, dragons are snake-like creatures with four short legs and having between three and five toes, depending on the type of dragon. They are usually not depicted as having wings. These dragons are generally red or gold, although other colors are sometimes seen. They are thought to be the guardians of the gates of Heaven. They control the winds and the waters of the Earth.

India is believed to be filled with enormous dragons, who live in each of the mountains. These dragons prey upon the creatures in the marshes. They have the ability to move faster than the wind, thus making it impossible for any creature to escape them.

The life expectancy of a dragon can reach well over 300 years. They are known to be extremely magically adept. They seek out heroic people from whom to steal magical items such as magic wands and rings. Others prefer instead to deal rationally with intelligent people, gaining their magic in a more ethical manner.

The personalities of dragons are often equated with the colors they assume. In dealing with dragons, the following personality traits can help one to know how to best deal with the particular dragon they may encounter.

Black dragons are known to be evil and chaotic. The best way to deal with them was to not make them angry in the first place, which is definitely easier said than done. These dragons, however, are also quite vain, and flattery may be your best weapon. Giving gifts such as mirrors may ensure your survival if you happen upon one of these creatures.

Gold dragons are believed to be the oldest race of dragons on the Earth. They are less violent than some of their counterparts and are more prone to intellectual pursuits. They seem to have the strongest treasure sense and love to collect knowledge, even while very young. If befriended, these dragons can prove to be an invaluable source of knowledge while out on any adventure.

Red dragons are extremely strong-willed. They are so passionate in their endeavors that there is no stopping them once they set their minds to something.

Dark green dragons are more in tune with nature than the other races. They are very caring creatures and make excellent healers.

Light green dragons, on the other hand, are quite different. They tend to be fidgety and always alert. In order to be happy, they must constantly be busy doing something.

Purple dragons are very dramatic and have a tendency to be a bit snobby.

Yellow dragons have a color that matches their sunny personalities. They are cheerful, upbeat, and carefree. They are always willing to lend a hand to those in need.

White dragons are kind, elegant, and shy.

Orange dragons are optimistic, artisitc, and quick-witted. Watch, out though! They also have a tendency to be short-tempered.

Blue dragons are deeply intelligent. They love to read and hate to be interrupted while thinking. They are also very good with magic.
