Easy Ways to Keep Ceiling Light Fixtures Clean

Ceiling fan light fixtures become dusty and dirty very quickly, especially when located in kitchens and other locations where grease and grime become airborne. Once particles of grease settle upon the glass, it holds onto dust particles, fur and anything else that is light enough to travel by air. It is impossible to simply dust it away. Once it builds up and becomes obvious, the fixtures must be removed and washed. Use these easy ways to keep your ceiling fan lights sparkling clean, and stop putting up with dusty, grimy globes.

Always Take Them Down First

To properly and safely clean ceiling fan light fixtures, always take them down before getting started. You can do a much better job when they are not connected overhead. For safety reasons, it is best to take them down when moisture will be used during the cleaning process. Consider obtaining help from an extra pair of hands. The job will be much easier and safer when you do not have to ascend and descend a ladder several times.

Place Basic Glass Fixtures in the Dishwasher

When ceiling fan light fixtures are not painted or embellished with something that could become damaged, use the dishwasher to clean the glass. Place the globes on the top rack, and wash them in the same manner as drinking glasses. Use spot rinse and they should come out sparkling clean.

When in doubt of the durability of the globes, consult the manufacturer before using the dishwasher to clean the glass, or use an extra globe to conduct a trial run. In any case, use less dishwashing detergent than usual to avoid permanently etching clear glass. Since they are probably only a little dusty, only a minimal amount of dishwashing detergent will be necessary.

Begin by running the hot water tap closest to the dishwasher to insure that the water will be hot during the first cycle for optimal cleaning. Also, space the globes at least one inch apart to avoid breakage. Use commonsense, and do not wash them next to bowls or other items that might shift.

Clean Painted or Other Decorative Fixtures with Baby Wipes

When ceiling fan light fixtures are painted or too delicate for the dishwasher, clean them by hand. Forget about filling up the sink with soapy water and rinsing them one by one. To clean the glass globes the easy way, use baby wipes and microfiber cloths. Select baby wipes that are all natural and formulated for delicate skin. When in doubt, test the cleaning method on a small inconspicuous area before going over an entire globe. More than likely, baby wipes will work beautifully to remove dust, grime, grease and anything else that would otherwise shroud the beauty of the fixtures.
