HGTV’s Next Design Star: David or Alice?

First there were 10 Design hopefuls…now were down to two. The two with the best design and artistic vision. Let’s take the sweetheart from Texas…Alice. Her designs have been consistently classic (well aside from the living room plate design). From her tiffany box blue impression to the final three challenge where she transformed a familys den to give it that manly but fasionable flare. Alice’s personality has been infectious! From the southern accent to her warm smile and sparkling eyes, you feel as though she’s the girl next door that you really trust and you can just see her becoming HGTV’s Next Design Star.

Now we come down to the final glass house challenge where Alice decides to design a child’s bedroom. I thought it was a sweet concept and I could see her vision, but unfortuantely, the vision did not translate well on camera. When I think of a childs bedroom, in my minds eye, I see color, fun, joy, comfort and a bit of fantasy.

I loved the silk drapes which brought in color but maybe a little too refined for a childs room? The colorful chandelier brought the fantasy as well as some of the other colorful furniture BUT the headboards which were the biggest items in the room were just BLAH and didn’t bring the room together and it really needed to in order to be considered HGTV’s Next Design Star.

That brings us to David. He has been a solid competitor from the beginning, but the most impressive design was the one that he put together out of items from a Pet store. Absolutely wonderful! Who would have thought you could have had such a well designed carpet using wood chips. His design translated well on camera and you would have never guessed what the material was if it wasn’t disclosed.

I loved Davd’s effort on the final three challenge, however I preferred Alice’s design best on that challenge. I also think David’s comfort level on camera is not where it should be in order to become HGTV’s Next Design Star, but he certainly has a rock star look and I think that comfort level will come with time.

Let’s take a look at David’s final glass house challenge and describe it with one word…..Elegant! It looks like a David design. His designs seem to have that sophisticated well appointed flare that has you wanting to see more and more. From the sketch pad to the vision of the bed being brought to life (thanks to Tim’s great construction skills).

The bed was beautifully dressed and the lighting was beyond words…they were magnificant! His asian inspired room was thought of from the ceiling where he had flowing panels to the river rocks that were outside of the space. As Vern mentioned regarding an earlier challenge…this was certainly a ROCK star effort and I think David is on his way to being America’s pick ifor HGTV’s Next Design Star.
