Make Your Own Automobile Air Fresheners

We’ve all seen those air fresheners that hang on your rearview mirror, and they’re not expensive, but why bother with them at all when you can make something even better – and cheaper. As a matter of fact, these air fresheners not only work great, but they cost mere pennies to make.

You probably have everything you need to make the automobile air fresheners. First you’ll need a mold. You have plenty of molds, more than likely, since any lid can become the mold. Peanut butter jar lids, coffee jar lids, and similar lids work well for making the air fresheners.

One other thing you’ll need is ordinary white glue. The glue will be the base of the air fresheners. Start by removing any cardboard disc inside the lid. Spray the inside of the lid with non-stick cooking spray to make it easy to extract the air freshener from the mold.

Squirt a quarter-inch of glue into the bottom of the mold. Cut a piece of elastic cord to use for the hanger. Form the cord into a loop and place the ends directly into the glue, allowing the loop of the cord to hang out, over the top.

If you want you can tint the glue so that it blends better with the colors in the chosen potpourri. Just stir a little paint into the glue before putting the glue in the bottom of the mold. Stir the color in well, put it in the mold, then add potpourri.

Choose small pieces of dry potpourri to place in the glue. Add a few pieces at a time pressing each piece down into the glue. Continue adding potpourri until the glue no longer squirts up between the potpourri pieces when pressing them down into the glue. When looking at the finished air freshener, you should see only pieces of potpourri sticking up out of the glue, and not the glue itself.

Allow the mold to sit and dry. This could take a couple of days, actually. The glue does dry slowly, but when it’s dry, your air freshener is ready to hang. Gently pull on the hanger to remove the air freshener from the mold. Now all you have to do is hang the unique air freshener in your car.

There are other things you can add to the potpourri if you wish. Add glitter to create a sparkly hanger that smells great. Or, before the glue dries, Press a satin bow into the glue in front of the elastic cord. Give the freshener a totally different look by embedding a fake jewel in the center of the potpourri.

There are lots of different molds you can make instead of using jar lids. Make any shape from foil and use it as the mold for your air freshener. The great thing about foil is that the glue won’t stick to it, so after filling the mold and letting the glue dry, you can simply peel away the foil to reveal the new air freshener. Wad up a ball of foil, place it in the center of the mold, and you’ll create a donut-shaped air freshener.

Create something really unique by adding the glue, then placing small beads around the circumference, before adding the potpourri to the mold. The beads give you a distinct border for your air freshener.

The fresheners aren’t just for vehicles. Make them to hang in bathrooms, closets or baby’s room. They’re fun to make and very easy. Get the kids involved and let each of them make one of the glue and potpourri air fresheners for their own rooms.

The length of time your air freshener will remain fragrant will mostly depend upon the potency of the potpourri you purchase. When the scent begins to fade away simply make another automobile air freshener. It’ll cost you next to nothing to make another one and you can create something entirely different than the former freshener. Now that you know how to make the air fresheners your car will always smell fresh and fragrant.
