Yummy Summer Smoothies

One of my favorite things about Spring and Summer is the availability of fresh fruits. All sorts of fruits from melons to berries are ripe for the picking and go great in many recipes. One of the most enjoyed fruit treats at my house is the fruit smoothie.

Smoothies can be light in fat and calories or a sinful indulgence based on the type of milk used. I use cow’s milk, but soy milk and rice milk may also be used in any of my recipes. Some of the smoothie recipes my kids and I have created are below.

Banana-Berry Smoothie

8oz of cold milk
one banana-sliced into Ã?½” thick piece
4 medium strawberries, sliced
1/3 c of blueberries
1 tsp of vanilla
2 tbsp of honey
2 cups of ice cubes

Blend all the ingredients except the ice until smooth. Add in ice one cup at a time and pulse until chopped. Then blend on highest setting until smooth. This recipe makes about two 8 ounce servings.

Melon-Berry Smoothie

8oz of cold milk
1 cup of honeydew melon cubes
4 medium strawberries, sliced
1/3 c of blueberries
1 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp of honey
2 cups of ice cubes

Blend all the ingredients except the ice until smooth. Add in ice one cup at a time and pulse until chopped. Then blend on highest setting until smooth. This recipe makes about two 8 ounce servings.

Chocolate-Banana Smoothie

8oz of cold milk
one banana-sliced into Ã?½” thick piece
1 tbsp of cocoa powder
1 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp of honey
2 cups of ice cubes
Blend all the ingredients except the ice until smooth. Add in ice one cup at a time and pulse until chopped. Then blend on highest setting until smooth. This recipe makes about three 4 ounce servings. (Peanut butter can also be added to this recipe for an extra smooth treat!)

In all of the recipes wheat germ can be added for a boost of essential fatty acids. Get creative with smoothie making! The combinations of fruits and flavors are endless!
