Taliban Man at Yale

The name “Taliban” means many things to people, oppressive regime, women haters, extremists, terrorists and many more. They have considerable support in and in surrounding Central Asian countries, but among Americans they didn’t have any friend. That is until now.

Yale, the Ivy League school which is out of reach for many talented and hard working, decent students because of its “high academic standards” and equally high fees has taken upon itself to befriend the terrorists of Taliban regime. If it was not for our very own New York Times, we would have been left out from knowing the depth of friendship between Yale and a regime which supported killing innocent civilians, women and Americans in name of Islam. The New York Times was the first to report this story in February of this year.

Yale, invited Sayed Rahmatullah Hashemi, former deputy foreign secretary of the Taliban to join their school as a non-degree student, apparently they didn’t want to lose another “high-profile” candidate to Harvard. This gives a whole new meaning to “high academic standard” at Yale.

So now this American institution held in such high regard in academic community, invited a Taliban terrorist to join its student body. I am all for equality and equal opportunity, but this guy who should be facing war crimes tribunal for supporting a regime that treated women like stray animals, a regime that validated amputations as a punishment for stealing, a regime which destroyed historic sites is now honored by an American institution. An institution in a nation which has always advocated human rights and justice (with varying degree of success, I agree). If this is not shameful then what is? Hear Russians joke about American style democracy?

I have a question for Yale; you invited Mr. Hashemi but what about thousands of women brutalized by his regime? What about the girls who could not go to school because of the twisted ideas of Taliban? Why not invite all Afghan women to join Yale? If you are really serious about making Yale a representative and diverse school, then you should invite all Afghan women to join your school and fund girl’s education in .

Yale is not the only one in this sick propaganda (which I think is to score a point against President Bush) the people who started an “educational foundation” to fund this Taliban man’s education should also be questioned. They have funds to help a terrorist’s luxurious life in Yale, but why are they not doing anything to help the Afghan government start school for kids in ? Hundreds of schools for girls were destroyed by the Taliban, Mr. Hashemi championed this “religious cleansing” effort. And now you are funding this man’s education. I have got news for you; your money is wasted as this Taliban man will never be educated. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

As time goes by, the regime of terror established by Taliban gets blurred and people are bound to forget the crimes they committed. An American university inviting a Taliban official to join its University is just the beginning; we will see more examples like this. .
