The Web’s Best Liberal Blogs

Writing political commentary for mass consumption used to be the sole domain of seasoned journalists, but the advent of web logs, or blogs, has changed all of that. Blogs have opened up a whole new world to writers, politicians, and concerned citizens who want to share news and opinions with a large audience, and to fuel discussion about political and social events.

In this day and age of conservative control and Fox News, blogs offers liberals a way to get their message out and comment on the current administration without having their writings sent through a right-wing filter. Political dissent has been decidedly out of vogue in the mainstream media since 9/11, but liberal bloggers are not constrained by political pressure, fear of loss of advertisers, or an ethical idiom to remain unbiased; they can tell the truth in all of its naked, biased glory.

Since the advent of blogs, the internet has been awash in pages deifying the Left and vilifying the Right. Some are good, some are bad, some are ugly, and some are downright brilliant. You would get lost trying to read them all. The following are – in my own humble opinion – the best liberal blogs on the web.

Third Place Goes to

Moxiegrrrl is a smart, snarky liberal blog that pokes fun at the Bush administration using an in-your-face style that would make your mother shudder. Written by Moxiegrrrl and her husband, Kid Bastard, it is a liberal blog that no self-respecting lefty should miss. In addition to political commentary, Moxiegrrrl’s site includes a count of American military deaths in Iraq, a running total of both the Gross National Debt and the cost of the Iraq war, and links to other liberal blogs of note. You can find Moxiegrrrl at http://www.moxiegrrrl.com.

And in Second Place

Seeing the Forest is an inspiring, comprehensive, informative, and funny liberal blog that demands that Americans get involved. Founded in 2002 by Dave Johnson, a veteran blogger and tech expert, Seeing the Forest was a credentialed blog at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and an MSNBC “Hardblogger” for 2004 election coverage. Johnson and his contributors, John Emerson and Thomas Leavitt, entertain and inform, reporting the news, delivering caustic commentary, and linking to other websites and liberal blogs when they can’t improve on it. And the Winner is

The Hue and Cry is a liberal blog written and maintained by Bob P., an advertising executive that has been involved in TV campaigns for Senator John Kerry and the Democratic National Committee, among others. His witty and biting prose sheds light on just how screwed up American politics has become, especially in posts like A Confederacy of Dunces, which highlights the fight Republicans have waged against homosexual couples that want to (gasp!) marry, and Pathetic, a response to Karl Rove’s comment that President Bush would “emphatically” veto legislation to expand federal funding of stem cell research. Bob P.’s commentary is no-holds-barred and pulls no punches. The Hue and Cry does the one thing that Democratic politicians can’t: tell it like it is.
