Smoking has become a major problem for people of all ages over the past few years. It has somehow become acceptable to smoke and a sort of smoking culture has developed in many countries over the years.

Whether you are a teenager, a grown up or an elderly person, smoking is perhaps one of the most harmful habits out there, and one of the most difficult habits to quit. Whether you smoke occasionally or empty a pack a day, quitting cigarettes can be very tough.

You need to have the will, the mental strength and a proper game plan to manage your nicotine cravings and get rid of this nasty habit. There are many people out there, who have quit smoking, and I shall be sharing a few of the tried and tested methods that helped them quit for good.

    Learn to substitute cigarettes with something else

    Most adults smoke to relieve stress, depression and anxiety. These are the major reasons why many people start smoking in the first place. You often feel like having a cigarette when you’ve just had a bad day. Smoking can serve as a temporary cure, but it never works in the long term. You always find yourself smoking more cigarettes to feel better, and you never feel any better.

    Breathing exercises are known to help ease stress. Regular physical exercise is also another way of feeling better and distracting yourself form whatever it is that’s bothering you.

    Design a game plan

    The best way to go about quitting smoking is to have a comprehensive plan ready. Outline all the reasons why you started, and list the major times you smoke a cigarette. Ask yourself questions, and think of the potential benefits of quitting.

    Go cold turkey

    Never ever tell yourself that you’ll cut down on the cigarettes and quit gradually. It never works. If you want to quit, go cold turkey. Make up your mind, get the support of close friends and family and just quit. Tell yourself that you can do it and refer to your game plan whenever need be.

    It’s often easier when you quit cigarettes together with friends or people who are close to you. A strong support system will be there whenever you feel the urge to smoke and need advice or need to share your feelings with anyone. It’s always easier when you have people who aim to achieve the same targets as you do.
