What Is a Stationary Steam Engine

Stationary steam engines are not the locomotive or any other type of engines. They are stationary engines used in pumping, operating factories and mills and also for power generation. These engines are particularly effective in areas where there is no electricity and mills are required to be run on these engines.  They come with different horse power capacity, depending on the use for which they are purchased for, but they are nowhere near the locomotive steam engines. In some of parts of the world they are still very popular and are being used for different tasks.

Stationary steam engines are a type of fixed engines used for pumping and power generation. They are also used in rural areas in flour mills and other factories where there is no electricity. These engines come with different horse power capacity, depending on the need of their use.

They are different from locomotive steam engines and engines of all other types. Their use in power generation has also proven to be very effective and are widely used in on-shore and off-shore power generation projects. However, their role in power generation role is limited in terms of power generation capacity and they are used for a lower power generation need.

There are different patterns of stationary steam engines. The types are identified or reckoned by the size of the cylinder and crankshaft. For example, beam engines have rocking beam connection between cylinder and crankshaft. Similar other patterns are identified according to their design.

These engines are also identified according to their purpose. For example, pumping engines are known by their use in pumping stations etc. They are also used for refrigeration, power and other purposes and thus are recognized according to their respective uses. However, they are the same type of stationary steam engines.

As the railway steam engines have become a part of historical heritage, the stationary steam engines still have many uses. They are sold to different parts of the world after they become unwanted in one part, although their maintenance and operational cost might be quite higher than use of other resources.

A stationary steam engine can be modified for an extended use. For example, in some parts of the world, people are running wood factories on these engines, cutting and reshaping wood for many purposes. Still, their basic function of helping operation of different equipment remains the same.
