How to Install a Deadbolt Lock

A deadbolt lock provides extra security for an entrance door. There are two types of deadbolt locks; a single cylinder and a double cylinder. On a single cylinder a lock finger latch opens the door from the inside. On a double cylinder lock you need a key to open the door from the inside.

Material and Tools:
Ã?½” wooden chisel
Adjustable hole saw
Electric drill
Drill Bits
Spade Bit
Awl
Pencil
Hammer

Step1:
Locate a position on the door for the lock and tape the cardboard template, supplied with the lockset, to the door. Mark your drill points with an awl.

Step2:
Adjust the hole saw for the cylinder diameter and then proceed to drill out the cylinder hole on the door.

Step3:
Using a spade bit, of the correct size, drill a hole for the latch bolt.

Step4:
Temporary install the latch bolt and screw into place. Using a pencil mark the center edge of the latch bolt. Now close the door and use this pencil mark to make another pencil mark on the door jamb. This will be the center for your strike plate mounting later on.

Step5:
Mark the outline of the latch bolt plate with a pencil. Then remove latch bolt from door.

Setp6:
Using the chisel and hammer, cut an outline of the latch bolt plate to a depth that makes the plate flush with the door when screwed back into the door.

Step7:
Make sure that the cylinder hole and latch bolt hole are clean of wood chips and then insert the latch bolt into the door and then the cylinder. Refer to the manufacture’s installation guide in how to properly line up the latch bolt and cylinder.

Step8:
Using the spade bit, drill a hole into the door jamb where the deadbolt is going to lock into. Use the pencil mark on the door jamb as your center guide. Next install the strike plate into the door jamb.
