How to Make a Deer Hunting Ground Blind

While tree stands are all the rage, the old fashioned ground blind is still a good way to harvest a deer and in some situations is even an advantage. A good ground blind should provide you with both a good view of the surrounding area and provide cover for small movements.

The key to a good ground blind is to get the blind erected as soon as possible. Deer need time to get used to seeing the blind in the woods and not be alarmed by its sudden appearance in the days before hunting season. For further effect place some dirty laundry in the blind to let deer get used to a human smell in the area. Another trick is to place a large trash bag hanging in sight above the blind so that deer are used to seeing movement and small noises coming for the blind. If you are hunting in an area with a lot of other hunters you may want to consider an orange ribbon above the blind as your blaze orange vest will be shielded from view by the blind itself.

There are numerous ways to make a deer hunting blind, but here is my favorite. You will need a few poles or thin pieces of lumber about four to five feet long. Large retailers and sporting goods stores sell either camo netting or burlap fabric, you will need this as well. Old fabric army tarps and other materials can of course be substituted. You will also need a large hammer / sledge hammer, and a stapler. You will probably also need an assistant.

Choose an area that provides a good view and then find a tree to use as the anchor of your stand. If possible a couple of trees close together are even better. Remove low limbs off of the tree (with landowner permission) that will be in your way. Don’t cut anymore limbs than necessary as they will help to break up your outline and movements. Drive poles into the ground in about a three foot radius of the tree. Staple the camo fabric to the tree and then to each pole making a wall. Don’t forget to leave an opening to get into the blind. Either make or buy something to sit on comfortably (a 5 gallon bucket and a pad work great) and you are ready to deer hunt from your new hunting blind!
