Poems Only Women Can Understand

Mockery

With hands claspt, lips apart and pale,
the old maid gazed upon the open window
from where words like wind through a wire screen
uttered ungodly and monstrous things:

Youth returns only in sleep!
From another time it haunts
with innocence and delight.

At the day’s moonlight in early morn,
all was gone,
but memory’s aching sight.

Rose d’Amour

Cool my lips –
they burn, they burn!
Scatter all the humid flowers
over me in showers.
Each dewy petal
I wear
sheds its tears.
But for you, my melted heart,
can a brimming bowl of flowers,
cool the love that scorches you.
