Summer is my favorite time of the year, the warm weather, swimming, sunshine, and vacations make it enjoyable. However, along with all the positive things there are some negative things like the unbearable heat, mosquitoes, wasps, other annoying insects, and poison ivy and poison oak. If you’ve ever received a dose of poison ivy or poison oak, you know what I’m talking about. The constant itching and blistering of a rash that has developed on your body from coming in contact with poison ivy and poison oak is anything but pleasant or enjoyable. You want relief and you want it immediately but instead of running to the drug store for calamine lotion or cortisone cream, there are a number of natural remedies you can try to help stop the itching and heal the rash.
Try some hydrotherapy to stop the itching of poison ivy and poison oak. Immediately after you have come into contact with the ivy or oak take a cool shower, the longer you shower, the better chances you have of reducing the rash. The next natural remedy to stop the itching is to apply some natural toothpaste that has clay or peppermint ingredients in it. The mint soothes the itching and the clay brings out the toxins to help heal the rash quickly. The only problem is that this product maybe hard to find, so try making your own. Mix 5 to 10 drops of peppermint essential oil with ½ cup of green clay, and then add water to make the paste thick. Spread over the rash one to three times a day for 2 to 3 days.
You can also try some evening primrose, which helps heal the skin faster. Take 1,500 mgs four times a day until your skin clears. Evening primrose works great to stop the itching and heal the rash. Another natural remedy to stop the itch of poison ivy and poison oak is vitamin C paste. To make the vitamin C paste, mix some vitamin C powder with small amounts of water to make a thick paste. To make the past, boil water, then let it cool, and add to Ã?¼ cup of vitamin C powder. Apply the paste to the rash and leave it on for an hour, then rinse off with cool water and pat your skin, don’t rub it. Do this three times a day. While you are applying the vitamin C paste, make sure you take vitamin C orally as well to help heal the rash. Take 500 mg of vitamin C until the rash heals. To help your body fight off the infection, you can also take 500 mgs of vitamin B6.
These natural remedies work much better to stop the itching and heal the poison ivy and poison oak rash than calamine lotion or cortisone cream. Most of these natural remedies will heal the rash and stop the itch within a couple of days or less.
