The Kirby G-Six Product Review, Worth Buying?

The “Kirby” is an old time vacuum, but does it measure up to the newer standards and late model vacuums? Known for its “old time” sales methods, but door-to-door salesmen, the Kirby has been around for several years. Weighing about triple what a “regular” vacuum would weigh, it’s become the Cadillac of vacuums. Read this article to find out if the Kirby is the way to go in a vacuum cleaner!

Started back in 1925, Jim Kirby invented the first upright vacuum cleaner, which would eventually lead to the formation of the Kirby Company in 1970.

Over the years, the Kirby has evolved into different models; they have become more lightweight, affordable and efficient. Currently, I own the “G-Six” model, from the early 1990’s. While it cost a small fortune at the time, the Kirby Company is willing to take trade ins from your old vacuum. At the time, they overpaid me on trade in value from my old Eureka and a steam cleaner I had hanging around. Still though, I had to take a loan out to purchase my new $1,800 vacuum.

With loan payments hanging over my head, I was anxious to use my new Kirby as often as I could. Known for its HEPA filter, it picks up literally everything within its path, including all the allergens in the air. If you have carpet that’s not laid down and stapled well, it will suck up your carpet. You definitely need to use caution when on a cleaning kick!

The Kirby weighs what feels like 100 lbs, but is incredibly easy to push around with its “drive” feature. You can flip it into “neutral” if you have the muscle to move it, but I would definitely recommend the self-propelling mode. Just hire a well-muscled man to move it, if you need to get it up and down the stairs.

Changing attachments is also a little more difficult because you need to remove the vacuum head completely to attach a hose. All the attachments that come with it work just as efficiently as the actual floor head. It looses no “suck power” at all. I don’t use them anymore, just remember to keep your hose away from a puppy that likes to chew, they will not fit on properly after that.

Overall, I’m incredibly pleased with my Kirby G-Six, and I will never consider another vacuum, even with its slight inconveniences. You do have to order bags from the company directly, but that’s okay too. Kirby representatives are incredibly friendly and helpful. If you never want to buy another vacuum again, make sure you check out the Kirby!
