How to Become a Muslim

While the Muslim extremists are working extremely hard to make Islam look like an extremely hard religion to follow, it is really not that tough to embrace and follow the religion that stresses on the oneness of God and asserts Muhammad as the last prophet.

There are a few things, however, which anyone interested in becoming a Muslim would need to do. At the same time, it needs to be said that instead of simply following everything that a person learns about Islam blindly, it is important to make an effort to understand the true meaning and purpose of all that Islam and Quran, the holy book of Muslims, talk about.

    The first thing that you need to do is to do an intensive research on the different pillars of Islam. Understand that the religion is based on five pillars, namely believe in the oneness of God, salat, giving zakat, fasting in the month of Ramadan and performing pilgrimage. Learn about these five pillars and their significance. Also learn the method of saying your prayers, giving zakat, performing pilgrimage and fasting.

    Use Quran as the primary guide when learning about Islam and its teachings. The holy book of Muslims carries the word of God and is an ideal source of information for anyone who is interested in learning about this particular faith. In case you do not understand some of the things written in Quran, get your hands on books carrying an elaboration of Quranic verses.

    Recite the first kalma, which is basically a declaration that you believe that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is the last prophet of Allah. It is widely believed that a person becomes a Muslim by merely reciting the first kalma and believing in it. If someone does not follow the teachings of Quran, then they become sinful Muslims, but remain Muslims nevertheless. This, however, is a debatable belief.

    You need to learn of the way a Muslim is expected to lead his life. It is important to keep in mind that Islam is not just a religion, but is also a way of life. There are a lot of sources for learning the Islamic way of living. The primary source is the Quran, while the secondary source is the Hadith, i.e. sayings of Muhammad, the last prophet.

    Take special care of personal hygiene. Islam considers cleanliness as 50 percent of faith. It is important to understand that cleanliness refers to both physical as well as mental cleanliness.
