The first layer should be long underwear, ideally of synthetic fibre as it helps in removing sweat from the body. Wear a thin thermal shirt that dries quickly. Do not choose cotton for the first layer as it gets wet and stays damp for a long time.
The second layer of clothing should be of fleece and wool. This layer will play a crucial part in keeping the body warm. Again, cotton should not be used for this part as it absorbs and retains moisture. For the middle layer you can wear sweaters, pullovers, sweatshirts and vests. Along with these, get waterproof pants that allow you to bend easily. The waterproof feature will help in staying dry in the snow. Nylon or snow pants will do the job well.
The socks should be warm but thin. It is better to put on two thin layers instead of one thick pair. Woolen socks are ideal as silk socks wear out quickly during sporting activities. Choose ski boots that press firmly against your feet for good control but are not very tight as that can stop blood circulation and cause discomfort. Ski boots are usually rented.
The final layer of clothing will be a warm jacket that helps in keeping off the cold and protecting your body from cool blasts of air. A water and windproof jacket can make skiing much more fun and comfortable. The jacket should ideally have an inner lining.
Gloves and mittens are a must while getting dressed for skiing. They will protect your hands from the cold. Put on a warm headband or helmet to prevent heat from escaping your head. Goggles and sunglasses will protect the eyes from the snow, wind and harmful UV rays.
