Separation anxiety disorder is a very serious problem. It most often affects children, but it can also be present in adults. The definition of separation anxiety disorder is a psychological condition in which an individual feels excessive anxiety when they are taken away from home or from people to whom they have a strong emotional attachment with. This is why this disease is most often seen in children. Children often suffer from this disorder for the first time when they are sent off to school. Again, even though separation anxiety disorder is most common in children, it can occur in people of all ages and in many situations.

Also, in older people an excessive fear of being without their object of affection for an extended period of time may be a symptom of separation anxiety disorder.
