How to Change a Shimano Zipp to a Campy

Taking into account the average cost of a pair of Zipp bicycle wheels, it would be really difficult to explain leaving a set for another when replacing from a Shimano to a Campy drive train. On the other hand, it is not absolutely necessary. Changing from Shimano to Campy is only about swapping the free hub body. Placed on the drive side of the rear wheel or on the right, the free hub body functions as the support for the cassette. Both kinds of cassettes possess their own unique design, and need the same kind of free hub as attachment.

Instructions

    Get started

Dislodge the rear cap from the passenger side or the left side of the axle. You can remove it with just your finger tip. Remember that you remove the cap, which is gray in colour. After that, put in a 2 mm Allen wrench into the non drive side axle, and turn the pinch bolt anticlockwise to relax it. Make sure you loosen the threads of the pinch nut and seal from the axle. Moreover, release the axle and free hub body from the driving side of the wheel.

    Remove the shim

Displace the 0.25 mm shim if it is attached to a side of the hub. However, if it is not placed on the side of the hub, it will be on the side of the free hub. Be aware of the fact that under no circumstances it needs to be involved in the installation of the Campy compatible free hub. As a result of this, remove it as soon as possible. Also make the red bearing shield detach from the axle, which is a little disk that safeguards the external hub bearings. This is the only piece of hardware installed on the axle. Make use of a rag to clean the axle from the grease. You will have to coat the axle with new grease.

    How to install the campy?

Move the blue bearing shield from the new Campy free hub and place it on the axle with the lofted surface facing in the direction of the bicycle. Attach the free hub onto the axle in order for it to get support from the bearing shield. Then add the pair of 0.25 mm shims onto the axle. The shims will support the inside area of the free hub body. Install the blue cap into the non driving side of the axle.
