How to Create a Successful Marriage

While many view marriage as the final chapter of a love story, it is actually just the beginning of a long and beautiful journey. Unfortunately, the journey is laden with challenges along the way, testing the commitment and sincerity of the couple to each other and the sacred bonds of matrimony that enjoin them.

The rising divorce rate indicates that a lot of couples are failing to keep their marriage alive nowadays. You, however, do not have to be one of those couples. If you truly love your spouse and want your marriage to remain successful, then you will have to make a genuine and committed effort to keep your spouse happy without really expecting anything in return.

Instructions

  • 1

Always respect each other, especially when you’ve got company. Criticizing your spouse and humiliating them in front of others may inflict deep emotional wounds, which would eventually cause them to turn bitter towards you. If you have something to say to them, hold it in until you are alone with them. When in public, use your face expressions to let your spouse know that you disapprove of their certain action or statement.

  • 2

Set fair fight rules and strictly adhere to them. If you and your spouse end up in an argument, make sure there are certain rules of engagement in place to keep both of you from crossing the limits. These rules may include no shouting, no name-calling, no abusing, sticking to the topic, etc. Irrespective of your anger or frustration, stick to these rules and encourage your spouse to do the same.

  • 3

Give each other time. If you want your marriage to work, you must take out time for your spouse no matter how hectic your daily routine may be. Make them feel that they are still an important part of your life and that you are still very much interested in spending time with them.

  • 4

Communicate with each other to develop, maintain and foster trust. Not talking enough to each other and discussing what’s on your mind can result in huge misunderstandings. Instead of assuming things, it is imperative that you sit down with your spouse and communicate with them. Share your day’s happenings with them and listen to theirs. If there is something on your mind, speak up.

  • 5

Work as a team. You must understand that in marriage, there is no “I”. You and your spouse are a team, who are supposed to support and help each other. If there is a challenge, you both are supposed to tackle it together. Whether it is a family crisis, a financial crisis, or some other crisis, always discuss the issue and work on a solution together.

  • 6

Appreciate each other. Even though you are very much in love with your spouse, it is important that you make them aware of your feelings. Compliment them and be affectionate towards them whenever you get an opportunity. Leave no doubt in their mind that they mean the world to you.

  • 7

Never give up on each other or marriage. The going may get a little tough at times, but you must hold on to each other. Throw the word “divorce” out of your dictionary.

  • 8

Handle the in-laws with care. You must understand that your spouse shares an unbreakable bond with his/her family. They were there for them long before you were and therefore they hold a special place of their own in your spouse’s heart and life. Treat them with respect and do not let anything they say get to you or affect your relation with your spouse.
