How to Fold a Prefold Cloth Diaper

Research today shows the benefits of cloth diapers over synthetic ones and it is a good idea to learn how to use them so you can be prepared when your little bundle of joy arrives. Folding cloth diapers can be tricky, but today most cloth diapers come prefolded, meaning that for the most part, they are manufactured with the main folds sewn in. However, they still need to be folded correctly to fit your baby comfortably. This guide will explain how to use the Angel Fold to tie a diaper securely around your baby.

Things Required:

– Prefold Diapers
– Cloth Diaper Covers
– Cloth Diaper Wraps

Instructions

  • 1

Take one cloth diaper and one cloth diaper cover, lay the prefold diaper in front of you, making sure that the serged ends of the prefold are at the top and bottom. Place the prefold diaper on top of the diaper covers vertically.

  • 2

Fold the serged edge at the bottom of the prefold diaper up towards the top edge of the diaper, should be roughly 1/3 the length of the prefold if you decide to use a cloth diaper doubler (which people use for extra absorption). You should lay it on the centre panel of the prefold (lengthwise) before you carry out this step.

  • 3

Now pull the already folded bottom left corner into the middle (place it in the centre panel) and repeat this for the right side as well. Your diaper should now be in a “V” shape. If you choose to use a stay dry liner, it should be inserted lengthwise inside the “V” at this stage.

Once you have the V shape, place your baby on the prefold diaper is such a way that the top serged edge is horizontal to the baby’s waist (at the back). Bring the folded portion of the diaper up between the baby’s legs. You can adjust the diaper at this point by letting out the fold based on your baby's comfort level and height.

Now bring the front of the cloth diaper cover between the baby's legs, it should be longer than the prefold at the waist. Secure the side tabs by wrapping the diaper cover’s wings around the Velcro panel in the front.
