How to Make a Wire Coat Hanger Cover

Hanger is a device in shape of human shoulders used to hang the clothes and keep them wrinkle free. The lower straight bar of the hanger is used to hang skirts or trousers.

Three basic types of clothes hangers are, wire hangers, wooden hangers and plastic hangers. The third type of hanger is mostly used now a days, but the wire hangers are the most durable ones and easy to make.

While plastic and wooden hangers need special techniques and equipment for their making, a wire hanger can be easily made at home.

– Wire hanger
– Pencil
– Fabric
– Scissors
– Needle

Instructions

  • 1

Take a sheet of newspaper and lay it on a smooth work surface. Place a wire hanger over the newspaper and trace its shape with the help of a pencil. You don’t need to trace the neck and hook of the hanger.

  • 2

Cut the pattern with the help of a pair of scissors, half inch away from the drawn shape.

  • 3

Take about half yard of a quality fabric and fold it so that the right sides are facing each other. Pin the newspaper hanger pattern to the folded fabric and cut it in the shape of the hanger pattern.

  • 4

Pin the paper pattern again to the fabric and cut, until you have four fabric pieces looking like the body of the hanger.

  • 5

Take a quarter yard of high-loft quilt batting and fold it into two layers. Pin the paper pattern to the batting and cut it as well.

  • 6

Measure one inch from the top neck of the hanger and cut off the tip of each fabric piece.

  • 7

Make two sets of the fabric pieces with the right sides facing each other.

  • 8

Baste together the slanted side edges of the fabric pieces, leaving half inch space. This will make the outside of the coat hanger cover.

Stitch the other set of the fabric as well, leaving a two to three inch opening on one edge.

Do not sew the bottom edge.

  • 9

Place the two pieces of cut batting together and sew them, about half inch in from the edge of the batting. After sewing the batting together, eliminate the bulk by trimming the seam to a quarter inch.

  • 10

Turn the hanger cover to the right side and slip it into the lining. Also slip the batting into the outside cover.

  • 11

Pin the top and bottom edges of the lining, hanger cover and batting together and sew them with the help of a sewing machine.

  • 12

Turn the right side out through the opening and hand sew the open end.

  • 13

Slip the cover over the wire hanger and fix it over the frame.
