The first step is to get to know what you are stressed about. Unless you know the reason for it, it will be hard to relax. When a person is under stress, he/she does not think rationally. So take a deep breath, breathing is known to ease up your mind and body. This will help you calm down and gain perspective.
Letting it out has always been a strategy to lighten your heart. Either take a paper and write down the reason for your stress or express yourself in front of a trusted person. Once it's out in the open, it will bother you less.
Now sit down and think of how blessed you are. You will find a lot of reasons to be thank full for. It could be your kids, successful career, your house or simply someone's smile could make you happy. This way you will start to think positive.
Take a break from your routine and give time to yourself. Do something you enjoy! It could be going to a spa and getting a massage because that helps in relieving tension, taking a stroll in the park, going shopping, painting, knitting, baking and so much more. This will make you feel good about yourself.
Another step that will keep your stress level low is eating a balanced and healthy diet. Make sure that you are taking the required nutrients. Also, find some time to exercise daily as it keeps you active and combats stress.
