How Laminate Flooring Can Improve Your Home

When it comes to improving your home, putting down new flooring is essential if you’re looking to increase the value or even the comforts of living. Laminate flooring is one option for you and not only is it easy to install, it is relatively inexpensive and will be an improvement that you’ll be glad you did.

This plank-type floor is made of up different layers. The first layer is clear and is generally a low to high density laminate and while similar to a counter top laminate, it is generally between ten and forty percent stronger and is much more resistant to damage. The second layer is the decorative layer and you’ll have many choices, whether it would be the look of wood or even tile flooring. Depending upon the manufacturer, there may be a third layer that is added for better stability. These layers, whether two or three, are then fused together by heat and pressure to a high density core, which may be made of fiber or wood particles. Of course, there are pros and cons to each core type, but generally, they are thought to be pretty similar. The manufacturer may also play a backing to the boards and it may be either melamine or paper. Either one will do its job of adding stability and protection from moisture, however, make sure that the manufacturer of the laminate flooring is a reputable one.

Most of the laminate floors will come in a size of approximately 8″ wide by 48″ long and most are under a ½” thick. Generally, the thickness of the laminate flooring does not have anything to do with the quality. What matters is how the flooring was constructed.

One of the best things about laminate flooring is that they are installed without the aid of glue and can be referred to as a “floating floor”. None of the pieces are glued directly to the floor and are only glued together at the tongues and grooves. Before laying your floor, a plastic sheet is put down, which will help protect from moisture and will help the floor to react better to different temperatures and conditions. A foam layer will be placed on top of the plastic and this will help to even out any irregularities in the sub-floor. You also have the option of purchasing a combined form of this where the plastic and foam come together in one sheet.

Another wonderful aspect of this type of flooring is how easy it is to maintain. Simply go over the floor with a dust mop, a vacuum cleaner with a hard-floor attachment, or a dampened mop. Clean it frequently and your floor will look great forever. In order to prevent damage to it, you can place mats or scatter rugs in front of high traffic areas, as well as in front of doorways and in front of sinks. Also, make sure to put protector pads under furniture feet, including chairs.

Decorating your home with laminate flooring will not only increase your home’s appeal, but also your home’s ideal functioning. Install laminate flooring near your entryways if you choose not to do your whole floor. There are many wood styles to choose from and you will be able to find something to suit your needs when shopping for laminate flooring. Again, just make sure that you buy your laminate flooring from a reputable manufacturer and you’ll never regret your choice.
