How to Hardcode External .SRT Subtitles into a Video File

Usually, when you watch a movie with subtitles, there is a file with .srt, .sub or .idx which controls the subtitles. The subtitle file is places separately with the movie file, and you can enable or disable it any time, while watching the movie. However, you cannot use the subtitle file when you watch movies on a device that does not support such file formats. Therefore, you will have to hardcore external subtitles files into your movie file. The process may appear a bit tricky. However, you can learn it in just one attempt and repeat anytime you want.

    In order to make the subtitles file work with Quicktime, you should have Perian installed in your computer. If you do not have it installed, go to Perian.com and download the installation file.

    Run the installation file and follow the onscreen prompts to complete the process.

    Once the installation is complete, you should check if Perian is loading the subtitle files. For that purpose, you will have to open the Quicktime preferences and select Perian.

    From the list of options, check if “load external subtitles” check box is checked. If it isn’t, then you will have click on the box appearing against it to make it checked.

    Now open the folder that contains the movie and the subtitle file. Before you open the movie file, make sure that the movie file name and the subtitle file name is same. Moreover, the subtitle file should be in .srt file format. Otherwise, you will have to use subtitle converter.

    For instance, if you have subtitle in .sub format, then you can use Sub2Srt software program. If you find it difficult to use a subtitle converter, then you can just Google the .srt version of the subtitle.

    Open the movie file in Quicktime and check if the subtitles are working. Once you find that everything is working perfectly, you can select the “Export” option from the “File” menu, which will open the “Save exported file as..." menu on your screen.

    Enter the name of the file and set the Export type. If you are not sure about what Export type to use for your video, then it is recommended that you should go with MPEG-4 file format.

    Click the “Save” button and the saving process will start. It may take few minutes, so be patient. Once the process is complete, you can play the video, and you will not need any subtitle file now.
