How to Perform Proper Step Technique

It is not difficult to perform step exercises, as you don’t need an assistant or any other special equipment. This technique can be easily carried out using a footstool, stairs or an aerobic step stool. However, make sure that you practice hard to avoid any injury while executing this exercise.

Other than using footstools or stairs, it is recommended to use the aerobic step tool, as it is specifically designed to carry out this task. It can be adjusted according to your height and has a nonslip surface too, which reduces the chances of an injury.

Instructions

    Adjust your stance

Your stance is quite important while performing the step technique otherwise you might take a heavy tumble and sustain an injury. Position your stepping tool in a spacious room and stand squarely in front of it. Make sure that there is a comfortable gap between your feet, so that you can easily carry out your exercise.

    Stay relaxed

If you are an expert, you can definitely carry out this technique easily.  However, never be hasty, if you are a starter. You need to be relaxed both physically and mentally in order to perform the step smoothly. Bend your knees slightly, but avoid locking them. Moreover, your shoulders should also not be stiff.

    Position your arms

You can either leave your arms by the side or position them on your hips. The former option is better for beginners. Furthermore, you can hold dumbbells in your hands, so that your abdominal muscles will be worked out properly once you perform the step. However, don’t do this from day one, as your arms will become stiff. Once you learn to perform the technique properly, you can then bring in the dumbbells.

    Start stepping

Once you have positioned yourself properly, it is time to start stepping. Lift your right foot above the ground and place it on the step tool. Follow the same procedure with your left foot to stand on the tool. Make sure your knees are bent throughout. Now, you need to reverse the process by moving your right foot back into the original position followed by the left foot.

    Pick up the pace

Once you feel that the process has become smooth, start increasing the pace, but don’t be too hasty. If you feel exhausted, slow down the exercise and wait until you build up more stamina.
