How to Use Classic Shell to Get a Classic Start Menu & Explorer Toolbar in Windows 8

Are you missing the collection of features that were available in the older edition of Windows but they have been removed from the latest version of Windows and Vista? Classic Shell not only has a classic start menu but it also adds a toolbar which contains several small features.

    First you will have to install the Classic Shell which can be downloaded by clicking on this link.

    There are total four features which you will be asked to install.

    Classic Explorer: This will assist in adding a Windows XP-style toolbar along with other tweaks to Windows Explorer.

    Classic Start Menu: It will add a Start menu and Start button of Windows XP-style. The Start menu is entirely skin-able and configurable.

    Classic IE9: This will add a caption that will display the title of the current page to the Internet Explorer’s title bar. Besides that the loading progress of the displayed page and the current security zone in the status bar will also be viewed.

    Classic Shell Update: the new versions of Classic Shell are automatically checked.

    Classic Shell’s theme is by default a Metro style theme which will merge into Windows 8's.

    The start menu has only one modern feature and that is the Search Box, which makes the searching process very efficient and speedy because it will only search for the applications which are installed.

    Drag your cursor towards the Start button and right click it and select Settings in order to view the options.

    A window with the title "Settings for Classic Start Menu 3.5.0" will come into view on your screen. Click on the Basic Settings tab and see which common option you would like to change. Any desired option can also be disabled.

    On the lower left side of the window an option of All Settings can be viewed. If you select that you will be given a chance to make an appropriate choice from more available options.

    Form the Skin tab you can easily select a nice look for your start menu.  You will find a variety of skin types.

    Classic Explorer:

    In the Classic Explorer a new toolbar is present in Windows Explorer. You will see a shell shaped icon on the upper right side of the window. This icon is used to adjust the settings of a toolbar.

    Click the icon and the Setting for Classic Explorer 3.5.0 titled window will appear on the screen.

    Click on the Toolbar Buttons tab in order to add more buttons. If you click All Settings option present on the lower left side of the window, then you can view more settings.

    Classic IE9

    Classic IE9 is basically used to add more features in the latest version of the Internet Explorer which are not available.

    In order to implement these features you will have to ensure that the add-ons are enabled in the window of Manage add-ons. If you do not see them then click the gear and select Manage Add-ons form the menu.
