How to Be a Great Follower

They say that in order to become a great leader, you first must learn to become a good follower. The statement is true to a some extent, but it is also a fact that not everyone can become a leader in their life. Having a commanding position over others does not always work even for those with good technical expertise, courage and foresight.

It is also true that one cannot become a brilliant leader unless there have good followers. To run an organisation, country or family successfully, you will always need good followers to keep things in order.

Instructions

  • 1

    Be loyal

Be loyal to your leader and pay attention to what they say. Being loyal does not mean that you cannot disagree with your leader as it is wise to have a different opinion but supporting them when they need your support and endorsing their positive points makes you a loyal follower.

  • 2

    Encourage your leader

A good follower is one that encourages their leader, no matter how tough the situation they are going through. Being a pessimist will only dent morale. So, in order to reap maximum benefits in your field (whatever it may be), you must create an environment where encouragement is given great importance. Even if your leader appears to be going in the wrong direction, do not discourage them by telling them that they are wrong, but drawing their attention to better options and ways is the right method to encourage them.

  • 3

    Point out flaws/mistakes

A great follower never lets their leader to repeatedly make mistakes. If you see your leader is doing something wrong and they also want you to do the same, you can tell them right from wrong without hurting their self-esteem and confidence. Remember a great follower is one who keeps their leader on the right path.

  • 4

    Take initiative

Do not sit back and wait for the instructions from your leader—take initiative and do your best. Most followers develop a bad habit of following only when they are given orders by their superiors or leaders. You should know that every boss likes a follower or a subordinate who is proactive and takes part in everything.

  • 5

    Never say never

Be positive, even if you see there are hurdles in getting something done. Your boss wants you to do your best and when you show a negative response and helplessness, they might feel helpless as well.
