How to Critique a Photography

Criticising something is one of the easiest things to do in the world; however, providing someone with a feedback which can help the person enhance his/her motivation level and not to repeat those mistakes in future is one of the most challenging things to do.

Photography is now considered to be an extremely important form of art as it captures a moment, which can be cherished for the rest of one’s life. It is not easy for anyone to be a photography critique, unless he or she is aware of the technicalities involved in this field. If you are a photographer or have been involved in this field in past, you would be in a much better position to make assessments.

A close look at the photograph

In order to be a good photography critique, you must develop a habit to have a close look at photos. Try to scan a photo with your eyes, making sure that your eyes observe every single detail involved in the photo. It is important not to reach a conclusion at this stage; just try to note down the positives and negatives in your opinion about a photograph.

    Interpretation

Interpretation of art is an extremely difficult thing to do. Try to concentrate on the photo and figure out what would have been going through the mind of the photographer while he/she was taking the picture or what message he or she is trying to give through this photo. Talk to your own self and ask certain questions. If you maintain focus, your chances of finding the right interpretation would be high.

If you are confused, there is no harm in talking to the photographer and asking him few relevant questions. This will help you understand his/her mindset.

    Technicalities

It is crucial for a critic to assess the technical aspects of a photo. You should know if the photographer has taken into account some technical factors like light, headroom, rule of third, brightness etc.

    Feedback

While writing a critique or expressing it live, you have to behave like a thorough professional and must sound objective. Avoid giving sweeping statements and mention the positive elements as well as the negative ones.

If you are criticising a photo, your criticism should sound positive and helpful. You should try to praise the effort of a photographer and mention the points where he can improve.
