How to Get Rid of Hic Cups

Hiccups choose the most awkward of times to attack. A quiet classroom, a serious corporate meeting and an important date are just three of the situations where they tend to do the most harm. While there is nothing embarrassing about having them, the constant ‘cluck’ sound from the throat is certainly not desirable. This has driven a large number of people out there to look for solutions to get rid of them. Hiccups can easily be put to an end with simple tips which can prove effective when nothing seems to work.

    Breathing exercise:

    Hiccups can be cured by following a certain breathing pattern. Firstly, exhale completely. Try to take as much air as possible out of your lungs. After you exhale completely, breathe in as much air as possible. When you inhale fully, hold your breath for as long as you can. If you have a problem holding your breath, you can swallow to relieve the pressure. Exhale the air slowly, and then you can start to breathe normally. If it is not effective the first time, repeat this step again for better results.

    Distract yourself:

    Distraction works best during hiccups. Try to concentrate on something which interests you and forget that you have hiccups. If this does not work, press the palm of one hand with the thumb of the other to the point where you start feeling a bit of pain. This activity will distract your mind and send signals to the brain which will forget about the hiccups.

    Plug the ears:

    Put a finger in each ear and keep them there for a while, roughly around a minute. You need to get your mind off the hiccups. This will send a relaxing signal to the diaphragm and the nervous system which will help ease the hiccups.

    Drink something:

    This is one of the more conventional tips, which has been used for centuries. Drinking a glass of water usually gets rid of the hiccups. You can also drink soda if available. The soda induces burps which put an end to hiccups. Drinking something is a solution which is still widely used for this problem. The rhythm of drinking in the esophagus buries the spasms of the diaphragm.

    Cover the nasal passage:

    Place both hands on your mouth and nose to cover the airways. There will be a carbon dioxide buildup in the covered area. This will relax your diaphragm and ease your hiccups. This works the same way as holding your breath.
