The event was founded by Ms. Caroline Aldiss, in 1988 and about 40 squares were involved in the event. A dedicated group of volunteers continue to work for the event. In 2007, grants from the Heritage Lottery fund and English Heritage came in and helped the event to grow and expand to a great extent.
At the Open Garden Square weekend, people roam around and enjoy the biodiversity of the beautiful Garden Squares. Guided walks at the garden squares help the visitors to get to know the details of the Garden Square. People can also join or participate in Group Cycle Rides which are free, but one has to purchase a ticket to enter Garden Square.
The event is held in the month of June every year.
It is usually a two day event.
