Door-to-door canvassing is a daunting task at the best of times. You are required to get the message of your company or group to the general public.

You might not be selling any product but people have a general misconception that every person at doorstep with a pamphlet is a salesperson.

However, you should not get all tensed up as with some useful tips and simple guidelines, you can canvas without awkwardness. Remember, courage and confidence is the key.

    Be confident and have a smile

    You should always have a smile on your face and be confident. In addition to this, you need to speak in a clear and loud voice with confidence. If the person comes out to greet you, you are required to shake his/her hand. Remember to state your cause right away whether you are canvassing for election campaigning purposes, census or any other cause. By this, the other person won’t consider you as a salesperson.

    You need to accept when a person refuses to take a flier and have to be respectful. Always keep in mind that no means no.

    You should always carry a map and a cell phone. Map will come handy when you get lost in the area. Cell phone on the other hand is useful in case there is an emergency.

    In case you are in a bad part of the town and someone mugs you, you should avoid hitting back. Do not use a pepper spray and simply give your wallet. This is because your life is much important than your money.
