    Know your Calling

If you are looking to start a nonprofit ministry, you must be totally convinced about it. It’s not just a charity and has a religious aspect of it as well and you must do it with no ill intentions or looking to make a buck for yourself.

    Get Incorporated

The next step is to get incorporated in the area in which you wish to operate in. You will need to get the name of the ministry registered as well as completing articles of incorporation and filing the necessary paper work along with the associated fees. The rules will vary in each state and you can get all the details from the local county’s office. Once you have been incorporated, you can move forward to other matters.

    Board of Directors

You will need to appoint a board of directors with a minimum of three directors. One of them can be paid and the others will have to be without a pay. Although there is no restriction on who can be a director, it is in the best interest of the ministry that you engage people who are genuinely interested in welfare and have a conviction to do good.

    Get Tax Exempt Status

Once everything is in place, you will need to file for tax exempt status with the IRS. Make sure that you fill in the right forms and provide the department with all the supporting documents. Once this has been done, the IRS will do its office work and soon your ministry will receive a tax exempt status.
