How to Treat Broca’s Aphasia

The frontal brain lobe in human beings controls language capabilities and when it gets damaged because of an injury to the brain, the result is Broca’s aphasia. Broca’s aphasia deprives patients of the ability to write and even speak their native language.

If Broca’s aphasia is not treated properly, completing even a single sentence becomes nearly impossible for the patient. That being said, Broca’s aphasia is a rare disorder and effects only the language capabilities of the patient. Fortunately, there are a number of ways in which Broca’s aphasia can be successfully treated.

Instructions

  • 1

Have the patient examined by a neurologist. The neurologist will identify the exact spot of injury which became the cause of Broca's aphasia. Chances of a swift recovery are higher if the physical injury that triggered Broca's aphasia is treated or at least stabilised quickly.

To date, there are no medical treatments available for recovery from Broca's aphasia. Intensive language therapy is the only way of retaining remaining language skills and recovering language capabilities that were lost as a result of Broca's aphasia.

  • 3

As soon as the patient regains consciousness, immediately consult a speech pathologist because the sooner therapy takes places, the higher will be the chances of a speedy recovery.

  • 4

Patients suffering from mild Broca's aphasia can recover in a matter of days without actual treatment from a speech pathologist. However, Broca's aphasia treatment is necessary if the disorder is relatively severe. It is important for the patient to stay hopeful because all is lost if hope is lost.

Broca's aphasia patients have specific needs which can only be identified by a professional speech pathologist. Your speech pathologist would administer tests that involve repetition, reading, writing and direction-following exercises. These tests are aimed at reigniting synaptic connections that were damaged as a result of injury to your brain.

With advancements in technology, a number of computer-aided programmes have been developed over the years which help Broca's aphasia patients communicate more efficiently. The best part about using this technique to treat Broca's aphasia is that the patient can use/take help from relevant computer-aided programmes at home.
