Difference between Gloss and Satin

Satin and gloss are two different types of paint finishes, with the difference lying in their sheen and consequently usage. Gloss paint, as the name suggests, has more shine as compared to satin paint, which is considered medium-gloss. High reflection of light leads to more glossier surfaces, which are also much easier to wash and clean. Given its stain resistant properties and ease of maintenance, gloss paint is usually preferred for kitchens and bathrooms, where durability is the major concern.

However, gloss is not preferred for general use and some rooms, like the bedroom or the living room, require a more subtle finish. This is where satin paint comes through with moderate durability and gloss. Furthermore, Satin paint is preferred to coat imperfect walls, so that the flaws are not obvious. While gloss paint provides superior durability, it is very unforgiving to flaws in your walls, which will be highlighted with the added shine it provides.

Satin paint provides a balance of durability and shine, as opposed to matte finishes, which are completely flat. Despite there being obvious differences between gloss and satin paint, their usefulness depends on the actual quality of the paint. A high quality satin paint may actually be more durable than a low quality gloss finish.

    Gloss

Gloss is a high-sheen paint finish. The sheen level in a paint can be characterized by the angular distribution of light that scatters after striking the surface. A gloss paint has the highest percentage of binder, a chemical that binds the pigment to the colour, and this is the reason it is more resistant to damage than any other kind of paint. It is also more resistant to staining and is highly washable thanks to glossy surface.

Gloss finishes are most commonly used on wood trims, doors, cabinets, bathrooms and kitchens since they require frequent cleaning and washing.

    Satin

A satin paint has a smooth, velvety finish that looks very elegant. It is very good for interior and exterior application and works well in high traffic areas such as children’s rooms or hallways. You can also apply a satin finish to doors and wood trims. Since it has a higher percentage of binder as compared to matte finishes, satin paint also works well in bathrooms and kitchens.
