How to Live With a Perfectionist Partner

So you have just realized that your partner, your better half is a perfectionist. Such people have standards set and do not accept anything below them. The people around them may feel annoyed and irritated because of criticism and complaints. There is no need to be scared that the rest of your life will be a struggle. If you really want you relationship to work, you need to understand their personality and tackle them accordingly.

    The key to success is patience. You may get the feeling that you are being attacked over every possible point and there are a lot of disagreements. Try not to react loudly at that moment and stay calm for sometime so that the anger boiling inside dies down. If you react all the time, the matters would just get worse. So there is no need to get defensive. Instead, when you have both cooled down, express it to your partner that you were hurt. The right timings can make matters a lot better.

    If you feel that your partner deserves praise, don’t hold back. If your partner is trying that the relation works, commend her efforts. It is very hard to change any body’s personality so if she is trying she needs to be acknowledged. For example you have some friends over for dinner and you tell her not to go over aboard and make a simple menu. If she has fought her inner self not to make that extra dish, make her feel that you noticed. Tell her that it was a great dinner.

    Try to meet half way. There are some points at which you should put in a little extra effort. Discuss with your partner to take a step down and you should take a step up. This way you both will find common ground. For example if your perfect husband wants you to get up at 7 daily and you get up at 9, settle for getting up at 8am.

    Just because your partner is a perfectionist, there is no need to disagree to every point for the sake of disagreeing. There may be times when he/she is right. It could be a genuine critique. If you react positively and accept your mistake it will be a boost for your partners esteem. Try to discuss with your partner that it is natural to have some faults and there is no shame in it. If you talk logically, he/she may understand your opinion.
