Difference Between Shredded and Grated

When talking about shredded and grated, there is a lot of difference between the two terms but it is the end product that we should be looking at and then decide which two seem more suitable.

Take food as an example, more specifically cheese. The need to decide whether to grate or shred it depends solely on what you are planning to make and how much of it you will need.

First of all, the major difference between shredded and grated is that the former results in the product being smoother and being in unitary shape and size. Grated material on the other hand will be finer, scattered, and in smaller pieces. The size of grated food differs in shape, unlike shredded food, which stays consistent with its thread like form.

Another major factor when differentiating between shredded and grated products is cooking time. Shredded products will generally cook slightly slower due to the thickness. The opposite is the case with grated products as they cook quicker due to their small size. Grated and shredded food products will also affect how your dish tastes and looks like in the end because of the density associated with the pieces.

Shredded items will generally be in longer strips and have greater density, while grated products will appear to be in tiny fragments of the original item.

    Shredded

When something is shredded, it will come out in a consistent size and shape. Cooking time and density will not change dramatically as compared to other cutting methods however. Shredding will also affect the end product in terms of how it looks and tastes due to the quantity generally being higher.

    Grated

Cutting a product into smaller, finer and different sized pieces is known as grating and is done to get a product which can be used to garnish and top off a dish. Cheese is a good example of being grated to be used on pizzas, salads and pasta.
