How to Choose the Best Deck on a Cruise Ship

Ships decks in olden times were divided according to rank – the wealthier passengers would remain on the top decks, while the common masses were confined to the lower decks. However, nowadays cruise ship decks are not divided according to any such criteria, and passengers can choose to stay on whichever deck they prefer.

There is no such thing as the “best” deck on a cruise ship, since “best” is a relative, subjective term, and can have a different meaning for different people. For this purpose, in order to stay on the best deck on a cruise ship, it is important to analyse your specific needs and wants, to determine which deck will be the most suitable for you.

Start by determining what you are most looking forward to doing, and choose the deck which offers you close proximity to the activity areas where you plan to spend most of your time. If you are aiming to spend most of your time sunbathing, choose the deck with the most pools, or the promenade deck. If you are looking for more of a culinary adventure, you can select the deck which houses the most restaurants and bars. Couples with children will want to stay near the family activity areas.

Next, consider how comfortable you and your family are when travelling by water – seasickness is an important factor that you must take into account when choosing a deck on a cruise ship. If you or your family are prone to seasickness, you should consider staying on the lower decks, which have less of a rocking motion. However, if seasickness is not an issue, you should be fine staying on the top decks.

Consider your tolerance level for noise. Some decks are filled with the most popular destinations on the cruise ship, and if you happen to select one of these decks, there is bound to be a lot of noise and foot traffic in your area and outside your cabin door, making it difficult to rest if you are a light sleeper. It also leads to less privacy. However, if you are looking for a more lively experience, a busy deck area should be fine.

Keep the fitness factor in mind while selecting a deck on your cruise ship. Eating and drinking are among the prime enjoyments on cruise ships, but these activities can be laced with guilt, owing to fears of weight gain. If you harbour any such concerns, you can choose a deck that is far away from the dining establishments on the cruise ship – this way, you will be forced to walk a longer distance, and thus fit in some exercise.
